A three-vehicle collision Thursday morning on Highway 17 was the latest in a string of accidents caused by wrong-way drivers on Bay Area highways.

The map above shows the locations of 14 crashes since February 2019, with numbers corresponding to the list below. Nineteen people were killed in the collisions. Click on the date for the full article about a crash.

  • Feb. 20, 2020, Highway 17, Los Gatos; 6 injured. A Capitola man driving south in the northbound lanes hit a car carrying four people near the Highway 85 interchange. A motorcyclist ran into the debris from the crash and was thrown to the road.
  • Feb. 19, 2020, Interstate 680 near Pleasanton. A man pursued by police drove south in the northbound lanes, then abandoned his pickup truck on the roadway south of the Sunol Boulevard on-ramp. Another vehicle hit it. No injuries were reported.
  • Jan. 17, 2020, Highway 17, Campbell; 1 killed. A San Jose woman driving south in the northbound lanes was killed when she collided with a car near Hamilton Avenue.
  • Jan. 16, 2020, Highway 1, Pacifica; 1 killed, 2 injured. A San Pablo man driving north in the southbound lanes was killed when he hit another car near Manor Drive. His passenger and the other car's driver were injured.
  • Dec. 21, 2019, Interstate 80, Fairfield; 9 injured. A car westbound in the eastbound lanes, driven by an allegedly drunk man, struck two vehicles head-on.
  • Dec. 16, 2019, Interstate 80, Pinole; 2 killed. A couple eastbound on Interstate 80 died when their car was struck by an SUV going the wrong way on the Appian Way exit. The SUV's driver, a South San Francisco man, was charged with murder.
  • Oct. 1, 2019, Highway 101, San Francisco; 4 killed. A Hillsborough woman driving a Volkswagen south in the northbound lanes near Candlestick Point hit a taxi cab. The Volkswagen driver and all three people in the taxi were killed.
  • Sept. 13, 2019, Highway 85, Mountain View; 2 killed. A Mountain View woman driving a Ford Explorer south in the northbound lanes hit a Honda Civic near the Highway 237 exit. Both drivers were killed.
  • June 30, 2019, Highway 24, Orinda; 2 killed. An Oakland man in a Saturn Vue driving east in the westbound lanes hit a Toyota Camry between the Fish Ranch and Wilder exits. The Saturn driver and one of his passengers are killed.
  • June 16, 2019,Highway 101, Palo Alto; 1 killed. A man going south in the northbound lanes near University Avenue died in a collision with another vehicle. The other driver suffered major injuries.
  • May 11, 2019, Highway 17 near Redwood Estates; 1 killed. A San Jose woman driving a Chrysler minivan north in the southbound lanes hit a minivan containing five teenagers. One of the teens was killed.
  • April 16, 2019, Highway 37, Novato; 1 killed. A Bodega Bay woman in a Hyundai Elantra driving west in the eastbound lanes was killed when she hit a Volkswagen Golf near Atherton Avenue.
  • February 9, 2019, Highway 1, Pacifica; 2 killed. A man in a Prius driving south in the northbound lanes near Clarendon Road collided with a Chevy Silverado. Two passengers in the Prius were killed.
  • February 3, 2019, Highway 101, San Francisco; 2 killed. A San Jose woman in a Volkswagen sedan driving south in the northbound lanes hit two cars just south of Cesar Chavez Street and a minivan near Alemany Boulevard. The woman in the Volkswagen and the minivan's driver were killed.
