The UK battened down its hatches for the second stormy weekend in a row as Storm Dennis hit on Saturday afternoon.

The weather worsened on Saturday evening and Storm Dennis is now causing widespread travel disruption and flooding as some roads were already struggling with surface water.

As much as a month's worth of rainfall was predicted overnight and into Sunday morning in some parts of the UK.

Amber warnings for rain and yellow warnings for wind are in place from Saturday afternoon into Sunday evening, with hundreds of homes and businesses across the country at risk of flooding.

This means flooding could cause a "danger to life," as power cuts are expected and there is a good chance transport links will be impacted.

By late Saturday evening there were 104 active flood warnings in England and Wales urging people to take immediate action, with another 369 flood alerts.

Among those are amber weather warnings for rain, including one that covers areas in Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, Hampshire, Kent, Surrey and West Sussex.

The Met Office says spells of heavy and prolonged rainfall are anticipated to bring around 20-40mm of rain quite widely, with 60-80mm possible in a few locations.

This rain is expected to fall in areas that have been saturated with water from recent downpours.

This warning expires at 6pm on Sunday evening.

Amber warnings in parts of North West England, South West England, Wales, Yorkshire and Humber, North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire are also in place until 3pm.

The Met Office said: "Spells of heavy and prolonged rain are expected to affect parts of England and Wales over the weekend with a higher likelihood of impacts now expected in some areas.

"Around 20-40 mm of rain will fall widely with 50-80 mm likely across parts of northern and southern England."

"This rain is expected to fall across areas already wet from recent rainfall."

One Met Office weather warning is in effect until 12pm on Monday.

The wild "perfect storm" is predicted to be worse than last week's Storm Ciara - dubbed storm of the century.

The Met Office have issued multiple weather warnings for heavy rain and strong winds as deep floodwater may cause "danger to life".

The Environment Agency says there are 34 flood warnings in place and 246 flood alerts across the UK.

Several rivers have already burst their banks, causing flooding across the UK.

Travel chaos is expected and flights cancelled amid eight weather warnings.

More than 230 easyJet flights in and out of the UK on Saturday have been axed due to the "danger to life" warnings - ruining 40,000 passengers half-term and holiday plans.

The British Army has been deployed to help with flood relief.

The MoD said 75 soldiers from 4th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland, have been sent to Ilkley and Calderdale in West Yorkshire.

They are helping build flood barriers and repair defences.

A further 70 Reservists from 4th Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment, will also be providing support where required.

What is a bomb cyclone?

A "bomb cyclone", or explosive cyclogenesis, is caused by a sharp drop in air pressure within a storm.

This can create winds of up to 95mph.

It happens when the air pressure drops by 24 millibars within 24 hours, which shifts the weather dramatically.

It got the name due to the dramatic drop which is similar to a bomb exploding.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: "On a slightly more technical definition, it's called rapid cyclogenesis. It's a low pressure system which drops 24 milibars in 24 hours or more.

"An easier way to think of it is, it's a low pressure weather system that drops really quickly."
